Tableau to Power BI migration
U.S. Air Force Leverages Wavicle’s EZConvertBI for Successful Power BI Migration
The United States Air Force (USAF) reached out to Wavicle seeking assistance with the migration of its human resources division’s dashboards from Tableau to Power BI. They wanted to move to Power BI to reduce their business intelligence costs and take advantage of existing resources, and with an upcoming Tableau license renewal date, a migration needed to happen quickly. The USAF needed assistance to convert the dashboards within the deadline while maintaining the integrity of their dashboards and reports.
With Wavicle’s EZConvertBI, the organization successfully migrated their dashboards from Tableau to Power BI within the deadline, exceeding expectations—and ensuring a smooth migration with minimal disruption to end users.
Key challenges in the migration process
The USAF manages a range of internal- and external-facing dashboards that report on a range of HR metrics. The division wanted to shift to Power BI for its enhanced integration capabilities, cost-effective licenses, better scalability, and alignment with their long-term technology strategy.
With their Tableau licenses approaching renewal, they sought to complete the migration on a rapid timeline to avoid additional licensing costs and ensure a seamless transition. However, executing a migration on such a strict deadline could lead to significantly higher costs, so finding an automated solution was ideal. In addition, the USAF sought to find a solution that would allow for all data in their systems to remain private.
The USAF partnered with Wavicle’s migration experts to lead the transition from Tableau to Power BI within their tight timeline and while maintaining complete data privacy. Using Wavicle’s automated BI conversion accelerator, EZConvertBI, the USAF relied on Wavicle to complete the migration on time and stay within budget.
An accelerated migration through EZConvertBI
The migration process was streamlined using Wavicle’s EZConvertBI accelerator, with manual adjustments made to ensure all charts, labels, and data structures were properly formatted for Power BI. This white glove approach ensured high fidelity in the migration process. To comply with strict data privacy requirements, Wavicle worked exclusively with synthetic data provided by the USAF. The use of metadata and synthetic sample records allowed dashboards to be recreated without exposing real data, ensuring privacy throughout the migration process.
The migration process consisted of two key steps. First, the analyzer scanned the USAF’s Tableau platform to evaluate existing dashboards, categorizing them by complexity and identifying reports that would require manual adjustments. Next, the automated converter migrated the selected dashboards from Tableau into the new Power BI platform and provided a summary report detailing the conversion process and outcomes.
As part of the migration, each dashboard was provided in Power BI Template (.PBIT) format, allowing the USAF to connect their internal data without needing to republish, further preserving data privacy.
A smooth transition to Power BI
Wavicle successfully migrated the USAF HR division’s dashboards using EZConvertBI and synthetic data to preserve data privacy while meeting budget and timing goals to ensure a swift and successful transition to Power BI.
With new Power BI dashboards designed to mirror the look and functionality of the previous Tableau versions, the organization faced little disruption and needed minimal training for end users. This streamlined the adoption process and minimized downtime.
The USAF was highly satisfied with both the process and the results of the migration, which met their requirements for privacy, function, budget, and time. The successful project not only exceeded delivery expectations but also positioned the organization to strategically align with its future technology goals using Microsoft’s data ecosystem. The collaboration demonstrated Wavicle’s ability to deliver cost-effective, secure, and scalable solutions under tight time constraints.
